Presentations by two recent adopters of the INTERCEPT Blood System share with you their blood center decisions regarding pathogen inactivation technologies involve assessment of many important product characteristics, including:

  • Regulatory approvals
  • Robustness and documentation of pathogen inactivation claims
  • Impact to daily operations
  • Evaluation of clinical and hemovigilance experience in patients

Dr. Lozano describes the technology and reviews the current regulatory, clinical and routine use of the systems for platelets and plasma. A brief update on the development status of INTERCEPT Red Cells is also provided.

Miguel Lozano, MD, PhD
Hemotherapy Section Head, Hospital Clinic Barcelona • Barcelona, Spain

Dr. Lozano is section head of the hematology service at the Hospital Clinical Barcelona. He is also chair of the AABB Press Editorial Board, and serves on the Scientific Committee for Transfusion Safety of the Spanish Ministry of Health. In addition, Dr. Lozano is the Spanish representative for the Council of Europe Committee of Experts on Quality Assurance in Blood Transfusion Services. He is the author or co-author of over 100 papers, monographs and book chapters and has co-edited a book for AABB Press about globalization in transfusion medicine as well as a book about pathogen inactivation of blood components.

Jean-Daniel Tissot, MD
Chief Physician, Blood Transfusion Center • Epalinges, Switzerland

Prof. Jean-Daniel Tissot specializes in internal medicine as well as in hematology. He is chief physician, Blood Transfusion Center, Epalinges (Service Régional Vaudois de Transfusion Sanguine, Lausanne, Switzerland), and also serves as medical director, University Hospital, Lausanne, Switzerland. In addition, he is a full professor of medicine, University of Lausanne Medical School. Prof. Tissot is involved in the study of blood proteins using proteomic tools. He has authored or co-authored approximately 130 papers or book chapters on various aspects of
transfusion medicine and proteomics. His current research projects include the evaluation of blood donors presenting with iron deficiency without anemia, as well as modifications of proteins of blood products during storage.

Lydia Blanco, MD
Director of Blood Transfusion Center, CHEMCYL • Valladolid, Spain

Dr. Blanco is director of the blood transfusion center of Castilla y Leon, and also serves as vice president of the Spanish society for blood transfusion (SETS). Her medical specialty is hematology and she also holds a Master’s degree in health administration. She has been Director of the blood
transfusion center of Madrid, and she has been coordinator of the Spanish accreditation committee for blood banks publishing the first editions of standards in transfusion medicine in Spain.
