Production Profile
In 2010, the Service Régional Vaudois de Transfusion Sanguine (SRTS VD) in Lausanne processed close to 31,000 whole blood collections and produced approximately 3,000 platelet concentrates. This makes Lausanne one of the largest regional blood transfusion centers of Switzerland.
The SRTS VD is one of the 13 members of the Blood Transfusion Service of the Swiss Red Cross (SRC). The Swiss Red Cross decided upon pathogen inactivation following the January 2009 death of a young patient transfused with a contaminated platelet concentrate. INTERCEPT has been implemented nationwide in all 13 SRC blood centers. The SRTS VD treats 100% of their platelet units with INTERCEPT. Adoption of INTERCEPT allowed them to optimize the ratio of whole blood and apheresis platelet collection, thus increasing product availability and realizing cost savings for the organization.
Professor Jean-Daniel Tissot comments, "Thanks to this new technology, we will be able to prepare platelets from whole blood. In this way, we will have much more flexibility in the use of blood products and we will make better use of the time people spend giving whole blood". INTERCEPT has been integrated into the SRTS VD production lab as shown in the floorplan at right.

Quality Control Data
SRTS VD maintains a rigorous QC program in order to ensure the final blood product characteristics are in compliance with national requirements. The tables below include SRCS’s QC data for INTERCEPT treated apheresis and buffy coat platelets.
