Collection and Processing: Amotosalen Addition

The unit of collected platelets or plasma is sterile docked to an appropriate INTERCEPT processing kit. The pathogen inactivation process begins with the addition of the photoactive compound, amotosalen HCl, to the blood component. For more information on the mechanism of action of amotosalen, see Mechanism of Action.

Amotosalen is added to platelets or plasma. Collected platelets or plasma are allowed to flow by gravity through a pre-filled container of amotosalen and into the illumination container. Premature exposure of amotosalen to UVA light is prevented by a protective red wrapper.

Each container in the treatment set is isolated from the others by a cannula, so that liquid flows into each container only when the processing technician is ready for the next treatment step.
